JUNIOR

MISSION STATEMENT
We strive for a basic level of Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills to encourage independence and self-esteem. We aim to nurture a love of learning within an environment of respect, honesty, compassion and laughter. We create a happy atmosphere in which our pupils strive to be the best they can be.

HOW TO ACHIEVE OUR MISSION STATEMENT
We have a team approach. The team consists of the following people:

  • Class teacher
  • Occupational therapist for individual and class therapy
  • Speech Therapist for individual and class therapy
  • Social Worker
  • PARENTS
  • Principal

Progress is the most important part of the Junior Phase.
We are the foundation of each child's life long learning process.

The Junior Phase consists of four groups:
  • Junior 1
  • Junior 2
  • Junior 3
  • Junior 4

GENERAL
  • Our Junior learners are between the ages of 6 to 10, sometimes older if the learner is not yet ready to move into the Intermediate Phase of the school.
  • Perceptual skills are taught throughout this phase as these skills are the basis for all learning. Therapist support is viewed as a vital element in the educational process.
  • Numeracy: We start with pre-numeracy skills. The pupils discover numbers through the use of concrete aids. All the numeracy skills that are required of a young learner are taught in the Junior Phase.
  • Literacy: Reading, writing and communication are very important. We start with the basic pre-reading, writing and communication skills. The learner gets individual attention and works on his/her own programme.
  • Life skills are very important in the Junior Phase. Life skills address the need for the child to achieve greater independence.

THERAPISTS
  • The Junior Phase has the support of a full-time Social Worker, Speech and Language therapist and Occupational therapist.
  • Speech and Language therapy and Occupational therapy sessions depend on the need and assessment results of the individual child. Our pupils receive:
    • individual
    • small group and/or
    • class therapy.
  • Each class has a weekly session with the Social Worker who co-ordinates the scheme for Personal Social Skills. The Social Worker also attends to any immediate problems the pupils may have.

Please be ensured that your child’s best interests are always considered of importance to us.

Thank you
