SENIOR PHASE

We aim to educate each individual within an environment of respect, honesty, compassion and laughter. We aim to create a safe environment, in which each child is academically extended and stimulated in all areas of learning. It is important that each child becomes the best they can be. We strive to provide opportunities to become productive, integrated members of society. Skills to encourage independence are emphasized.
Our Senior Work Experience Programme actively looks at the integration aspects of where your child might ‘fit’ into society when they are ready to leave school. Our new Life Orientation programme clearly sets out examples of what we feel our children should be able to competently achieve regarding independence. Productive implies that our children not only integrate into society but find a sense of purpose and add to the overall societal value by bringing their own unique contribution to society.
Two streams are available within our senior phase.
- A life orientation curriculum, which consists of promoting skills from which the learner will benefit for life. The aim of this stream is the promotion of independence and supported work placement. Learning areas include literacy, numeracy, social etiquette, kitchen hygienist, crafters, cookery for independent living, design and technology, computers, sports, home management, career preparation and work experience. This is a skills based programme with a less academic or theoretical component. Learners are not expected to write exams.
- A second stream consists of compulsory core subjects being ABET literacy, ABET numeracy and life orientation. Additional compulsory subjects are: computers, cookery, design and technology, career preparation, work experience and life skills. The aim of this stream is for the child to be integrated and productive within society. Learners of this stream are prepared to write exams.
As part of this stream, seniors are offered a choice of vocational courses (some accredited and others pending accreditation). The following vocational subjects are being presented: office administration, assistant chef, educare, maintenance, carpentry, crafters and computers.
